Rockbridge NAACP Ted DeLaney Higher Education Opportunity Grant

The Ted DeLaney Education Opportunity Grant Programs are named in honor of the late Dr. Theodore DeLaney, Professor Emeritus of History at Washington and Lee University and a Rockbridge NAACP Freedom Fund honoree and seek to promote racial equality and equal educational opportunities for our community members in need. Thanks to generous donations from local institutional and individual donors, it offers stipends to cover costs of education-related initiatives, projects, or instruction.

The Ted DeLaney Higher Education Opportunity Grant is open to residents of Rockbridge County, Lexington, and Buena Vista. It is not age-restricted, but young people seeking higher education following high school—including college, job training program costs, or professional trade school—are given priority. Grants are offered based on individual applications and a determination of need.

Girls, women, and minorities are strongly encouraged to apply.

Applicants for higher education endeavors should apply for a Higher Education Opportunity Grant by June 15 for program or institutional terms starting the following September or thereafter.

A recommendation from the applicant’s school principal, counselor, or teacher should be provided with the application.

Grantees are asked to provide contact information for the program or institution they’ll be attending and will be asked to provide a brief report upon completion of the program or school term at the institution.
