A look back at some of the activities and accomplishments our local chapter took on in 2021!

Funding local youth from the Ted Delaney Youth Opportunity Grant

  • Scholarship for one local youth to help cover costs of a 4-year program at the Universal Technical Institute in Mooresville, North Carolina
  • Scholarship to a sophomore in high school to attend a 4-year program at Mary Baldwin College for exceptionally gifted students
  • A Hoofbeats 12-week therapeutic horse-riding program for one local youth
  • A summer week at the YMCA for 2 local youths
  • A week at the Lexington Office on Youth Summer Fun Program for 2 local youths

Irma Thompson grants of $1,000+ are available to newly hired educators of color for moving and relocation expenses in the Rockbridge-Lexington-Buena Vista area

The Education Committee is working with the W&L Journalism department to address the Rockbridge NAACP education initiatives.

Rockbridge NAACP is part of the local Racial Equity/Justice Coalition which offered two forums on the history and future of local educators of color and other initiatives.

Supporting the Walker Program, which funds and supports local African American entrepreneurs.

Throughout 2021, twenty-one aspiring entrepreneurs have been participating in the training and grant application process.

The Economic Committee did a Webinar to help with personal finance—creating and keeping wealth even in low income range situations.

Outreach work to support registration for people getting the COVID-19 vaccinations

Generous donation to the Glasgow Community Center for building repair.

Weekly ads to the News-Gazette highlighting community activities and issues

Co-sponsor of Latinx celebration in Lexington’s Hopkins Square

Co-sponsor of the showing at Hull’s in June 2021 of the documentary based on the book, Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools.

Created a matching grant challenge for Rockbridge Area Transportation System which helped them raise over $3,000.

Supported a neighboring NAACP unit in Waynesboro with a Gold Level donation to their Freedom Fund event.

Connected with the community by hosting an information booth at the Rockbridge Community Festival

Co-sponsor of the Juneteenth Celebration in Lexington.
